About Us

How We Started

I met Rebecca in 2016 during a teaching fellowship in a primary school in Ziope, Volta Region of Ghana. Like most teenage girls, Rebecca had the biggest dreams, but her dreams were threatened by lack of mentors in her life, low self confidence and the exposure to empowering opportunities. I started interacting with Rebecca, first as her class teacher and eventually I took her on as a mentee. Soon Rebecca, became the first girl to be the student body president and made it to one of the best senior secondary schools in her region. One year into my mentoring relationship with Rebecca, she led a group of over 20 girls in her community to undertake a peer-to-peer educational workshop on menstrual hygiene and teenage pregnancy prevention in the nearby communities.  Rebecca is just one girl, but her story opened my eyes to the many other Rebeccas around, that is how BeBetter Mentorship Program was born. Seeing the success with Rebecca, it was evident that many more girls will benefit from having mentors in their lives. – Yvonne Peters Asamoning (Founder)

What We Do

BeBetter Mentorship Program provides individual mentoring (One-on-one) for promising underprivileged girls in underserved communities of Ghana. Our target group is 13-18 year old girls who are at a risk of not excelling academically without the much needed guidance and motivation they need to stand tall among their peers. Through mentoring, these girls will be exposed to the world of opportunities for personal growth and leadership development.

The girls(mentees) are matched with mentors from diverse professional backgrounds to be guided to attain personal development and academic progress. The mentees will also benefit from a network of leaders nurturing them and encouraging them to succeed.

Outcomes of our mentoring program is that mentees will have a smooth transition from primary to secondary school and from there to higher levels of education. What we hope to be true for mentees is that they excel confidently in their talents, due to the presence of a mentor in their lives.

Mentees
Why

Girls with higher motivation, confidence, connectedness and performance are more likely to stay in school and proceed to the next level of educational journey. They are more likely to seek support from their network in times of challenges therefore reducing their risk of dropping out of school or engaging in self-destructive behaviours. Against this background, BeBetter Mentorship Program is designed as a tool to minimize effects of the socio-cultural, economic and systemic challenges hindering the progress of initiatives backing girls’ education in Ghana.

Vision

BeBetter Mentorship Program envisions a world where all girls have access to opportunities that set them up to live their truest purpose at their highest potential.
