Recruitment

Our target students are those in underserved communities. It is important that participants display a strong sense of commitment, ambition and willingness to excel therefore, these students are chosen through a process of application and assessments to ascertain their strengths and areas for growth. Mentors on the other hand are recruited through a rigorous process of applications, interviews and background checks. They are recruited from all areas of profession to give the mentees the experience of a plethora of professions.

Mentors' Training

Mentors are given an initial training covering all the essential knowledge needed for a successful relationship between mentor and mentee. They will also keep receiving ongoing complementary training throughout the mentoring process.

Matching

Matching of mentees to mentors takes place through a process of determining the suitability of mentors to mentees. We consider factors such as the interests, likes, dislikes, proximity, professional goals and values of both mentors and mentees. Matching plays a critical role in mentor-mentee relationships.

Individual Mentoring

This one-on-one process will take place after school hours, in a location convenient for both the mentee and the mentor. The preferred location is the school premises as this program is semi-school based. This means that where the program is able to reach an agreement, we will use the school premises. The individual mentoring process forms 70% of the program, with mentees engaging in one-on-one conversations with their matched mentor for about an hour.

Masterclass & Project Events

In addition to individual mentoring, mentees take part in Masterclasses where there is a convening of all mentees, mentors and notable persons in relevant fields of work. The aim of this is to further expand the network of the mentees and expose them to other educational opportunities. The last activity mentees engage in is; they work in groups to identify challenges in their schools and communities and propose their own solutions to them. This activity teaches them to work in teams, give them the skill of identifying problems and be solution driven individuals.

Graduation

After 8 months of active participation in one-on-one mentoring, camps and social activities, the mentees exit the program through a graduation event that sees them transitioning to different levels of academic life. After exiting the program, the mentees journey will continue to be observed to evaluate the impact of the mentorship program. BeBetter Mentorship Program will share opportunities for further personal development sessions, scholarship opportunities and fun trips with the mentees who will now be alumni.

MODULES

Overall, the entire duration of mentoring runs through four core modules;

  • Who am I?
  • Where do I want to go?
  • Who and/or what is stopping me?
  • How do I get to where I want to go?
